T.I. f/ Bun B – “Front Back”
from King promo sampler (Grand Hustle/Atlantic, 2006)
Most of you probably remember the Mannie Fresh produced “Front Back” as a T.I. track that had a guest appearance from UGK. The track didn’t always feature UGK though. In fact, when it was originally recorded it only featured Bun B because Pimp C was still locked up at the time.
Parts of this version allude to his incarceration, like T.I. saying “Free Pimp C!” during the intro and then talking about what he and Bun are going to do “when Pimp walk out that courthouse.” Obviously these allusions were removed once Pimp got out and was able to contribute to the track himself.
Speaking of which, “Front Back” was actually one of the first songs that Pimp worked on after he got out of jail. (I’ve heard he was working on it two or three days after his release.) I’m actually rather glad this track was re-recorded to feature him. The chorus part in this version is sorely lacking his “Never let hoe ass n*ggas ride!” line.
Besides appearing on the sampler for King, this version of “Front Back” (but with the longer title of “Front, Back, Side to Side”) also appeared on the DJ Drama hosted mixtape The Leak which featured a bunch of tracks meant for King that ended up being leaked prematurely.
