Site News: The Re-Up

Guess who’s back. Again.

Where did I go? I needed a break from blogging and the Internet, so I took one. There’s not much else to it. I am sorry for up and disappearing on y’all though.

As penance, I’ll be posting two .zips containing all the content I’ve posted on the site: one will have UGK loosies and the other CD singles and vinyl rips. I figure that should tide you guys over while I take on the unenviable task of culling all of the dead links from old posts and updating them.

I need an intern to do this shit, man.

UGK Loosies: 50+ UGK joints, ranging from their guest work to remixes to whatever else. It’s almost 700MB, so it’s split into multiple parts: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.

UGK Singles: Coming soon. Most of the singles that I posted were my own personal rips, so I gotta do a little bit of digging in the archives to find the discs. Here is part one. Part two is still cooking.

Site News: I Ain’t Dead, I’m Alive

No, I’m not dead and I haven’t forgotten the site. I’ve just been busy with life outside the Internet and blogging in general… you know how that goes. I’ve also been working on re-doing the site’s theme from scratch. You might not notice a huge difference visually, but the underlying code is a lot neater and more manageable, which makes my job a helluva lot easier.

Anyway, since the new theme is finished and implemented and my life shit is sorted out, I don’t really have much of an excuse to not start posting again. You should start seeing new posts on a semi-regular basis again by mid-week, barring something unfortunate happening.

P.S. Check out my new Cash Money-centric Tumblr Loud Pipes, Big Rims.

Site News: The Trill Connection Turns One

Well, the blog turned one almost a week ago—August 14th to be exact. But I’ve been busy with real life shit, so I haven’t been able to write a post dedicated to it until now.

When I started this blog, I just wanted to post some obscure UGK features and share them with whoever was reading. With every song I tried to get as much information I could about it, even if that meant spending a few extra hours scouring through dead GeoCities sites or random forum and blog posts. Sure, it was a lot of leg work, but I felt that it was worth it in the end. I think that extra bit of information helps a listener understand the music better.

I also thought it was important because despite UGK’s legendary status in hip-hop, a large chunk of their catalog goes unnoticed and undocumented. I mean, yeah, everybody knows Ridin’ Dirty by heart, but who remembers “You Wanna Ride” from 3-2′s The Wicked Buddah Baby? Or Bun B’s memorable hook from PSK-13′s “Like Yesterday”? Or the three different versions of “Get the Green Boy” with Pimp C? It’s that kind of stuff that I wanted to showcase.

I hope that in the last 365 days or so that I’ve been able to impart something to anyone who has come to my site, whether it’s here or my old digs at BlogSpot. It doesn’t matter if I shared some music that was new to you, or told you something about UGK that you didn’t know before. If you took something away from what I’m doing, then I’m doing my job right.

No post like this would be complete without shout outs. As such, before I end this I would just like to take some time out to thank all of my readers, friends, followers, and affiliates. This includes:

Qdawg, WhiteTim, Mr. Bionic, scjoha, J-Real, Kam, Kuci06, Swishas N Kush, noz, MAYNHOLUP, Soft Money, WalkMasterFlex, Raheem Lee, the DGB fam (BLuHaZe, Ziploc Moe, Dre), Dirty D/Dre’matic, JB, ThaJsta, Iceberg Slim, Smahzay, Mark Ward, Davey Boy Smith, Rob Pursey, DJ Superix, Justin Ivey, Andrew Barber, Nick Rosenberg, DragonflyJonez, NicholsAccomp, TrillMONTANA, DJ B-Do, TOE, Steve Below, KD, DJ Burnone, Dirty Yella, DJ Smallz, and the RMC crew (Ron, Julie, CBW, Ci, Black Aristocrat, and NumeroUNO).

And of course, I gotta give a big thanks to Bun B and Pimp C. (UGK 4 Life!) To anybody I may have forgot, please believe that it’s nothing personal. I’ll be sure to get you next year. In the mean time, thank you.

Site News: New Domain… Fresh Start

Welcome to the new home of The Trill Connection. Wipe your feet.

For those of you out there who have followed me here from the old BlogSpot site, you already know the score. The rest of this post isn’t really meant for you. It’s mostly for the new-comers.

To those aforementioned new-comers: I’ll spare you from a long-winded introduction, since I doubt you’re here to listen to me talk. I’m Percy Mack and this is The Trill Connection.

The main focus of this blog is to try to catalog the 20+ year long discography of legendary rap duo UGK, especially their guest verses on other people’s albums. If you don’t already know about the Underground Kingz, you need a late pass along with a copy of Ridin’ Dirty.

As anyone who is familiar with their body of work can attest to, Pimp C and Bun B have rhymed on a lot of tracks—whether it be together as a group or separately—and most of them appeared on albums that are long out-of-print by now. For a group whose influence has been so far-reaching in southern hip-hop (or just hip-hop in general really), their non-album and guest appearance material can be a pain to track down and document properly.

Luckily, with a little help from modern technology these tracks can be easily liberated and be made available for the masses once again. I will be posting them here along with whatever relevant information I can find to give the tracks some background.

But I won’t stop at just music. Over time, you should be able to find a wealth of UGK-related minutiae here, ranging from music videos, to interviews, to whatever else I can get my grubby paws on. The only thing you won’t find here is any of UGK’s studio albums or solo projects. If you want those joints, you should be supportive and buy that shit.

P.S. From now on, visiting the old BlogSpot site will re-direct you here. Don’t worry though: that site’s content hasn’t been lost. I’m currently working on migrating the posts to their new home here. But the process will be slow, mostly because I’m a perfectionist and will probably be re-writing the majority of them.

P.P.S. I’d like to give a shout-out to Dante Carfanga from Numero Group: By the Numbers for the picture of the UGK mural that I used for this site’s banner and the background of the old BlogSpot site. I never acknowledged him before, so I just wanted to do so now.
